DAY 11 - VIENNA, AUSTRIA - PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

We boarded our bus headed to Prague at 6:50 this morning. We were all tired and prepared to sleep for the four hour bus ride that was to follow.

Lähdimme tänään ajamaan Prahaa kohti kello 6:50 aamulla. Olimme kaikki väsyneitä ja valmiina jatkamaan yöunia neljän tunnin bussimatkan ajan.
We arrived at the Holiday Inn around noon where we soon checked in and headed to lunch. After a buffet lunch from the hotel we had some downtime before heading off in local tour buses for our Prague Sightseeing Tour. Our tour guide started the tour by explaining the metro system to us, as well as where to buy tickets and how cheap the tickets are. We then proceeded to drive through the town to the bridge that goes over Park Folimanka. The bridge, the Nusle Bridge, was opened in 1973.

The next stop on our tour was the Prague Castle. Prague Castle and Cathedral started construction c. 880 and was finished around 1929. The construction took over 600 years due to interruptions from multiple wars over the years. In 1541 there was a large a devastating fire that destroyed most of the castle. The Castle has been reconstructed and redone many times over the years. In 1618 the second defenestration started the Bohemian Revolution, in which two members of royalty were knocked out the window of the castle. The Revolution started wars in which parts of the castle was destroyed once again. The last major rebuilding of the castle was carried out by Empress Maria Theresa in the second half of the 18th century. Following his abdication in 1848, and the succession of his nephew, Franz Joseph made Prague Castle his home.
Rakentaminen kesti yli 600 vuotta useista sodista johtuvien keskeytyksien takia. Vuonna 1541 suuri tulipalo tuhosi suuren osan siihen asti rakennetusta linnasta. Linnaa on uudelleen rakennettu useita kertoja vuosien aikana. Vuonna 1618 toinen defenestraatio aloitti Böömin vallankumouksen, jossa kaksi kuninkaallista heitettiin linnan ikkunasta ulos. Vallankumous aloitti sotia, joissa osia linnasta tuhoutui uudelleen. Viimeisin linnan suuri kunnostus toteutettiin keisarinna Maria Theresan toimesta 1750 -luvulla. Hän luopui kruunusta vuonna 1848, jolloin hänen veljenpoikansa Franz Joseph, joka nousi valtaan, teki Prahan linnasta kotinsa.

The St Vitus Cathedral is Roman Catholic and construction began in C.930 and after destruction and reconstruction during wars, it was finally completed in 1929. The cathedral we visited had walls of stone and stained glass windows that ran almost from floor to ceiling. Bright colours of pink, yellow and green let the light beam in. Above the entrance was a circular stained glass window, ten and a half metres each way. Given Prague is such a popular tourist destination, there were hundreds of people in the area around the cathedral and we were in a crowd of others who were apart of other tours. We stood around the entrance in awe of the beautiful architecture and listened to the guide giving a brief history including facts such as how bohemian kings are buried in the crypt.

After our tour, we had the rest of the day off. During our free time many of us relaxed in the hotel or nearby. Many of us were exhausted from the day of traveling and the tour. We went for dinner and hung out with many other exchange students.

Kierroksen jälkeen meillä oli loppupäivä vapaata. Vapaa-ajallamme moni meistä rentoutui hotellilla tai lähialueilla. Olimme väsyneitä päivän matkasta ja kierroksesta. Menimme illalliselle ja hengailimme muiden vaihto-oppilaiden kanssa. We hope you enjoyed our day!

Toivottavasti nautitte päivästämme!
